Course Transfer

Registered UCI undergraduate students can guarantee both degree and subject credit for courses subsequently taken at another institution by having an Advance Contract petition approved in advance of taking the course.

The purpose of the Advance Contract is to inform the student what type of credit will be granted for the completion of a given course. The Advance Contract should be completed prior to taking the course but not more than one year prior to enrolling in the course. The student is responsible for having official transcripts sent after completion of the course. Transcripts should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

Specific approved courses can be found on-line by using ASSIST at www.assist.org.

For courses which are not found in the articulation agreements on-line at ASSIST, students will need to request a course substitution by completing an Undergraduate Petition. In order to properly evaluate the course material, students will need to submit a syllabus and/or text and quizzes from the course offered at the other institution.

Courses equivalent in content and purpose to courses taught at UCI transfer with credit toward the bachelor's degree, as determined by the Office of Admissions. Exceptions are in the cases of:

  1. duplication of credit with courses taken at UCI or elsewhere;
  2. courses which might be prerequisite to, or more elementary than, courses already taken;
  3. limitations of credit in certain applied or activitiy courses;
  4. credits that will increase the student's total quarter units transferred from community college to 105 or more.
