Course Variation

Students are required to satisfy the requirements for a bachelor degree as outlined in the UCI General Catalogue. Occasionally, however, it is not possible due to time conflicts or changes in course offerings to fulfill the requirements exactly as they are stated. The School of Engineering will in some cases allow students to take a course other than the one stated in the students degree requirements.

Students may ask for a variation in an engineering requirement when the alternate course is similar in content and the student can provide a clear justification for why the published requirement cannot be met. The variation will need to be approved by an academic counselor, the student's academic department, and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

Students may also ask for a variation in a breadth sequence if the student is unable to complete one or more courses due to time conflict. The variation must be a course which satisfies the breadth category and the student must provide a clear justification for why the published requirement cannot be met. The variation will need to be approved by an academic counselor and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

Students requesting a course variation must complete an Undergraduate Petition.
