| Why should I fill out an Individual Study Proposal form? Students need to submit (to the Student Affairs Office) a signed Individual Study Proposal form for all 198 and 199 courses in order to obtain course credit. This form provides a brief description of the work and serves as documentaion for ABET. In order to obtain design credit toward the degree, a copy of the final written paper needs to be submitted to the instructor as well as the Student Affairs Office. |
The School of Engineering has the following policies in place for students wishing to take Individual Study (199) or Group Study (198) courses. Please contact the Student Affairs Office for further clarification and application to special situations.
Individual Study (199) and Group Study (198) courses vary from department to department. All 198 and 199 courses, however, must be taken for a letter grade (no P/NP). Students must complete and submit an Individual Study Proposal to the Student Affairs Office at the same time the student enrolls in the course. All 199 courses may be taken for technical elective credit with or without design credit. The student must specify how many units of design credit will be earned in taking the 199. Students taking Individual Study (199) or Group Study (198) for design credit must submit a written paper to the instructor as well as the UGSA office.
There are certain restrictions on how many units of 199 credit can be used to satisfy degree requirements. Students may earn more 199 units than the restrictions allow, but these additional units will only impact the cumulative GPA. 199 restrictions are as follows:
Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering Majors: at most an aggregate total of 4 units of 199 may be used to satisfy degree requirement.
Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering Majors: at most an aggregate total of 6 units of 199 may be used to satisfy degree requirement.
Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering Majors: at most an aggregate total of 6 units of 199 may be used to satisfy degree requirement. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required to enroll in 199 courses.
Chemical Engineering Majors: see an academic counselor regarding aggregate totals.
See the Procedure for Individual Study Proposal for instructions on obtaining and completing the paperwork for this action.
