Change of Major Guidelines

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the deadline for changing major?

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering accepts change of major applications continuously throughout the year. Unaffiliated students must declare and be accepted into a major once they attain 90 units. All students considering a change of major need to show a realistic proposal to complete the new major/degree within a 5 year plan of study.

Where do I find requirements for changing major?

The School publishes a document on Change of Major Guidelines for applying to or changing major within The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. These guidelines are posted at www.due.uci.edu. The campus maintains a document on UCI Change of Major Guidelines which includes most of this information, as well as requirements for changing to any other major on campus.

The current change of major criteria was approved by the Council on Educational Policy in Spring 2003. They remain in effect until further notice.

UCI Change of Major Guidelines

These guidelines are for students with fewer than 90 total units. Students with more than 90 total units will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Students wishing to declare a major in the School of Engineering need to meet the stated prerequisites and GPA.

Students are encouraged to talk to the Engineering Peer Academic Advisors and may apply at any time during the year.

Freshman that are on track to complete prerequisite coursework by the end of the first year and currently meet the minimum GPA are encouraged to apply immediately.

Dual-majors

Students wishing to declare a dual major in the School of Engineering need to meet the requirements of each individual major and in addition have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Dual majors will not be approved for Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical (you may not do both).

Intradepartmental Changes

Students may at any time change major within their department (i.e., from Mechanical Engineering to Aerospace Engineering) provided they are in good standing and making normal progress toward their desired major.
