Repetition of Courses

Frequently Asked Questions:

If I retake a class, does the previous grade in that class stay on my transcript?

Yes, the previous grade received in that class will remain on your transcript. For the first 16 units of repeated course work (usually 4 classes), the second grade will be the grade used in calculating your GPA. Once 16 units are repeated, then the first grade is not replaced and both grades are used to calculate the GPA.

My GPA last quarter was below a 1.5, what is going to happen?

Freshmen: Students whose GPA falls below a 1.5 during the Fall or the Winter of the first year will need to sign an Exit Contract from The School of Engineering.

Continuing Students: Students whose GPA falls below a 1.5 are subject to disqualification. Students who are subject to disqualification will be required to sign an academic contract to either remain in The School of Engineering or to find a new major outside of Engineering. Failure to meet all the terms of the continuing contract will result in the need to exit engineering and failure to meet the terms of an exit contract will result in the need to exit UCI or disqualification.

Some courses are designed to be taken more than one time, such as 199 courses. The UCI General Catalogue listing for the course indicates if it's approved for repetition and how often it may be repeated.

Other courses may be repeated under certain circumstances:

  1. Conditions: Students may repeat only those courses in which they received a grade of C-, D+, D, D-, F, NP, or a permanent Incomplete. All courses which were originally taken for a letter grade must be repeated for a letter grade. Courses originally taken on the P/NP basis may be repeated for a P/NP or for a letter grade if the course is so offered.
  2. Approval: Repetition of a course more than once requires approval in all instances of the School in which the student is enrolled.
  3. Degree Credit: Degree credit for a course will be given only once; but the grade assigned at each enrollment shall be permanently recorded.
  4. Grade Point Average: In computing the grade point average of undergraduates who repeat courses in which they received a grade of C-, D+, D, D-, F, or NP (if repeated for a letter grade), only the most recently earned grades and grade points shall be used for the first 16 units repeated. In the case of further repetitions, the grade point average shall be based on all grades assigned and total units attempted.

Students that repeat a course for which a passing grade has already been received and which is not approved as repeatable for credit will receive a UR and no credit will be given. Students that complete a course which substantially repeats coursework already taken at another university, or for which they earned credit via Advanced Placement or other examination will receive a notation of L6 on their transcript and no credit will be given.
