Frequently Asked Questions:
| Can I take a course at a community college? Yes. Students in The School of Engineering are able to fulfill course requirements at a community college EXCEPT for lower and upper division writing. In order to verify course equivalency from a community college, refer to the ASSIST website www.assist.org. In order to be guaranteed degree and subject credit students must fill out an Advance Contract and have that contract approved before the course is taken. |
| Can I take more than 20 units a quarter? Students wishing to enroll in more than 20 units must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and complete an online request to Exceed 20 Units. |
| How do I make sure that units transfer from another school? There are two steps to ensure units transfer:
- Before taking the course, get approval for course credit either with an Advance Contract for community college courses, or a Course Substitution petition for courses from other UC campuses and schools not listed on www.assist.org.
- After completing the course, submit an official, final transcript to the Office of Admissions.

| I can't add a class in WebReg. What can I do? There are several reasons why you may not be able to enroll:
- You do not meet the published prerequistes, or WebReg is unable to recognize that you do meet the prerequisites (common if the prerequisite was taken at another college).
- You do not satisfy one of the restrictions placed on the course. Major and school restrictions are common as are 'NOR' (New-Only Reserved), seats reserved for first time students. Check the comments in WebSOC for details.
- The course is full or it conflicts with another course you are already enrolled in. Look for an alternate time or add yourself to the waitlist. You may also be trying to exceed your approved number of units.
In all cases, you can contact the department or school that offers the course for assistance. For engineering courses, students having problems with a prerequisite or restriction may fill out an online request for Course Authorization.
Freshmen often have trouble enrolling in physics, which requires enrolling in the math corequisite first, then the physics lab, then the physics lecure. Check the comments for details. |
| Where do I go to petition a class? Some petitions are submitted online by signing into 'My Account' or can be downloaded and printed. All paper petitions are available at the Engineering Undergraduate Student Affairs office. |
| Why should I fill out an Individual Study Proposal form? Students need to submit (to the Student Affairs Office) a signed Individual Study Proposal form for all 198 and 199 courses in order to obtain course credit. This form provides a brief description of the work and serves as documentaion for ABET. In order to obtain design credit toward the degree, a copy of the final written paper needs to be submitted to the instructor as well as the Student Affairs Office. |
UCI undergraduate students may now submit a variety of online petitions either directly to the Engineering Student Affairs Office or through the Office of the Registrar.
The following are currently available to students to be completed online. Students can complete the form and track the status of the petition to the right.
- Advance Contract
- In order for a registered UCI undergraduate to be guaranteed both degree and subject credit for courses subsequently taken in either a summer or regular session at another institution, this petition must be approved by the Dean or Director of the student's school or program. The petition cannot be filed earlier than one year in advance of enrollment in the course(s).
- Biomedical Minor Application
- Students interested in the minor in Biomedical Engineering must apply through The Henry Samueli School of Engineering Student Affairs Office, must be sophomore standing or above, and have a UCI cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Course Authorization
- Students may find they cannot enroll in engineering courses and need authorization. Two mechanism may be at work here:
- Prerequisite Checking: Students must meet all published prerequisites, but WebReg often doesn't recognize non-UCI coursework. Students that have met prerequisites through non-UCI coursework should complete an online course authorization request. In the case of a prerequisite waiver, a petition will need to be signed by the Professor justifying the course enrollment.
- Enrollment Restrictions: Engineering routinely restricts courses to engineering majors only, but occasionally restricts courses to specific majors or to certain populations such as seniors. These restrictions are generally lifted during the adjustment period. Students that need to enroll to one of these courses prior to the adjustment period may request to do so with sufficient justification. Students still need to meet prerequisites and must specify specific course codes to be authorized in.
- Exceed 20 Units
- UCI policy permits students to take no more than 20 units per quarter. Students may petition their school to exceed 20 units.
- The Henry Samueli School of Engineering permits high-achieving students to exceed 20 units. Students typically need to demonstrate a pattern of achievement with high course loads and be following a program of study approved by their academic counselor. Students with GPAs below 3.0 are rarely approved.
- Materials Science Engineering Minor Application
- Students interested in the minor in Materials Science Engineering must apply through The Henry Samueli School of Engineering Student Affairs Office, have a UCI cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and completed the following courses before applying: Chemistry 1A and one Chemistry lab; Mathematics 2D, 2J, 2E; Physics 7B and one Physics lab.
- Residency Waiver
- UCI requires that students take at least 36 of their final 48 units at UCI. In rare circumstances students may be permitted to take more than 12 units at another institution.
- Variation to Degree Requirements
- Students may request a variation to the departmental, Engineering, or UCI requirements for their major.
