Aerospace Engineering Transfer Guidelines

Aerospace Engineering students transferring to UCI can complete the program in two years with summer coursework if they have completed the following:

  • IGETC (Optional for admission)
  • Two years of mathematics: calculus through differential equations and vector calculus. (One year is required for admission, the second year is optional)
  • One year of physics through electromagnetism and optics. (Required for admission)
  • One year of chemistry. (Required for admission)
  • One course in computing. (Required for admission)

As with most engineering programs, the challenge for the transfer student typically comes from not being able to find sufficient engineering coursework at community colleges. UCI's Aerospace Engineering program includes five additional quarters of engineering coursework in the freshman and sophomore years which limits course options for transfer students due to prerequisites. Availability of these courses at community colleges varies widely. These are:

  • Statics
  • Dynamics
  • Thermodynamics (not available in two-year colleges)
  • Introduction to Materials
  • Network Analysis I

Completing statics prior to transfer is strongly recommended to reduce the course load for the first summer session. Students are also welcome to complete the program in three years and avoid the summer courses. The program does accommodate five breadth courses for students that do not enter with IGETC.

Program of Study

The sample program of study chart shown is typical for the major in Aerospace Engineering. Students who are admitted with alternate preparation, or who wish to make changes in the sequence for other reasons, must have their programs approved by their advisor. Aerospace Engineering majors must consult at least once every year with the academic advisors in the Student Affairs Office and with their faculty advisor.
