Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the generation and application of knowledge relating the composition, structure, and synthesis of materials to their properties and applications. During the past two decades, Materials Science and Engineering has become an indispensable component of modern engineering education, partly because of the crucial role materials play in national defense, the quality of life, and the economic security and competitiveness of the nation; and partly because the selection of materials has increasingly become an integral part of almost every modern engineering design.
