Change of Major

The School of Engineering has set requirements for those who want to change their major to engineering. You will find the requirements listed below for each major available within our school. Please note, these requirements ONLY apply to students who have 90 units or less. If you have more than 90 units when you apply, it is under the discretion of the Undergraduate Student Affairs Office to decide if your application will be accepted, even if you have met the minimum requirements listed below. It is not guaranteed that you will be accepted if you have over 90 units.

Aerospace Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 overall GPA in all courses required for the major with no grade below a ā€˜C’.

A maximum of 6 units of repeats in courses required for the major.

Completion of the following courses: ENGRMAE 10, Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A, Chem 1LE
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Biomedical Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following: BME 1, Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A-B-C, Chem 1LC
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Biomedical Engineering, Premed
Cumulative UC GPA3.50 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.50 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following: BME1, Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A-B-C, Chem 1LC.
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Chemical Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following: Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D and Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A-B-C and Chem 1LC.
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Civil Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following: Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A-B, Chem 1LC or 1LE, ENGRCEE 20
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Computer Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following: Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, EECS 12, EECS 20, EECS 31
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Computer Science and Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.7 overall and 2.7 quarterly GPA in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major request.
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in prerequisite courses:
Math 2A-B-D.
Physics 7C-7D, 7LC-7LD.
ICS 21-22 or CSE 31-32 or ICS 31-32 or CSE 41-42.
OtherStudents admitted to the major in Computer Science and Engineering will be assigned to the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences or The Henry Samueli School of Engineering based on enrollment. Students with more than 90 units will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, provided they have made substantial progress in courses required for the major.
Electrical Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA.
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following:Math 2A-B-DPhysics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LDEECS 1, EECS 10, EECS 31
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Environmental Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 GPA in all courses required for the major and completion of at least the following:Math 2A-B-DPhysics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LDChem 1A-B, Chem 1LC or 1LEENGRCEE 20
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
Materials Science and Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesAverage of 3.0 GPA in the following courses: Math 2A-B-DPhysics 7C-7D and Physics 7LC-7LD, ENGR 1A or Chem 1A, Chem 1B-1C, Chem 1LC.
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 quarters.
Mechanical Engineering
Cumulative UC GPA2.70 GPA
Course gradesMinimum 3.0 overall GPA in all courses required for the major with no grade below a ā€˜C’.

Completion of the following courses: ENGRMAE 10, Math 2A-B-D, Physics 7C-D, Physics 7LC-LD, Chem 1A, Chem 1LE
Other90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.

Applications for change of major are reviewed by a committee every quarter. Below you will find the application period for each quarter. Deadlines are strictly enforced. If you miss the deadline, your application will be reviewed the following quarter. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Deadlines for Change of Major Applications

Fall 2024

Application Period: September 17, 2024 to October 11, 2024
Decisions will be made by November 15, 2024, by 5:00 PM

Winter 2025

Application Period: December 19, 2024 to January 17, 2025
Decisions will be made by February 17, 2024, by 5:00 PM

Spring 2025

Application Period: March 27, 2025 to April 11, 2025
Decisions will be made by May 12, 2025, by 5:00 PM

Summer 2025

First Review:
Application Period: June 9, 2025 to June 23, 2025
Decisions will be made by July 14th, 2025

Second Review:
Application Period: July 16, 2025 to September 18, 2025
Decisions will be made by September 29, 2025

Change of major requirements must be completed before applying. This means final grades must be posted to your transcript. Failure to complete the minimum requirements will result in an automatic denial of the major you are applying for.

Applications will be reviewed in the same quarter that they are submitted for. For example, an application for Spring 2024 will be based on grades from Winter 2024.
