Engineering Course Enrollment Restrictions

Many engineering courses are major-restricted during the enrollment period. Please refer to the Engineering Course Enrollment Restrictions page to learn if and when major restrictions will be lifted.

How to create your study plan

  1. Review the UCI Catalogue for your major requirements, prerequisites, and course descriptions. You will also find University and General Education requirements.
  2. You can also look at your DegreeWorks to track your progress and see courses you are still missing.
  3. Use our Teaching Plan to see when your required courses should be taken. Keep in mind Engineering courses have many prerequisites. Also, several engineering courses are offered only ONCE a year.
  4. Feel free to use our templates when creating your study plan.

Some helpful tips when planning

  • Community College Credit: Many students choose to take GE or even major required courses at a community college. Check out Assist and learn more about our articulation agreements with the California Community Colleges. Remember lower division writing MUST be completed at UCI.
How to find college courses that count towards UCI GE categories

Method 1:

  1. Navigate to Assist.org. Choose your community college on the right-hand side.
  2. Click on ” UC Transferable Courses.”
  3. Choose your subject/department.
  4. Find your course and under the column “UC areas”
    • UC-B = GE III @ UCI
    • UC-H = GE IV @ UCI
      • If a course lists UC-B, UC-H, you can choose what GE you want the course to count towards; GE III or GE IV.

Method 2:
Follow the steps below find a community college equivalent to a UCI GE, such as Anthro 2A which count towards GE III and GE VIII. (Not all colleges have exact equivalents for UCI GEs, in this case, follow Method 1).

  • Navigate to Assist.org. Choose your community college.
  • Click on ” View Agreements”
  • Choose your subject/department under “Major”.

GEs that Double Count At UCI: Some courses may satisfy two categories. A course cannot count for GE III and IV or GE VI and VII.

Degreeworks

DegreeWorks: A degree audit report that helps students keep track of their degree requirements. Here are some common areas of confusion students encounter when reviewing their Degreeworks.
Newly Admitted students will not be able to view their Degreeworks until November 2025.

GE II and V

GE II and V
Engineering students automatically complete GE II and V with their major requirements. This section of your Degreeworks will automatically complete itself. AP courses will automatically fill in.

GE V completed

ex. GE V major required courses completed by AP scores.

GE III and IV

GE III and IV
When reviewing either category, please take note of the following differences.
Choose from one of the following options:

  • 3 courses category refers to 3 UC Irvine courses. (most common option by students)
  • Transfer: 2 semester category courses refers to 2 semester courses completed at a Community College.
ex. GE III
Ex. GE III.

Note: If you complete 1 GE III course at UCI, you will still need to complete 2 additional GE III courses via Community College or UCI. You cannot mix 1 UCI course with 1 Community College course to complete the option: Transfer: 2 semester category courses.

GE VI – Language

If you completed 3 years or more of a high school language, your GE VI will show as satisfied. Request DegreeWorks Update Submit Online Form if this requirement is not updated for you. Allow 5 -7 days for the update to be made.

VI. Language Satisfied by 3 years H.S. study

If you are unsure of how many years your High School courses counted for, visit University of California A-G Course List and search via by high school, followed by your language courses.

LOTE via website tool

If you want to continue taking language at UCI, please visit: Language Placement | UCI School of Humanities

GE VII and VIII

You will need one course to complete GE VII and one course to complete GE VIII.
Some courses from GE III or IV may satisfy GE VII or GE VIII. View GEs that Double Count At UCI.

GE VII

ignore 6 classes

Unless you planned to complete Humanities core as a first-year student, please ignore the “6 classes”

Courses showing under “Electives”

If a General Education or other major required course is showing under electives, Request DegreeWorks Update Submit Online Form — Allow 5 -7 days for the update to be made. This usually occurs with Technical Electives or GE courses taken at a Community College.

ex. GE courses not applying to GE section

“Electives” are at the bottom of the Degreeworks page.

Writing Placement

Writing Course Flowchart

Academic English– only for students who are placed via the UCI Writing Placement Process. Contact for Questions.

Entry Level Writing Requirement – Students who have not yet fulfilled the Entry Level Writing Requirement by other means must begin the sequence with WR 40 or WR 45 depending on where they are placed via the UCI Writing Placement Process

Lower Division Writing GE I: – Contact for Questions or to Petition a course to count for LDWR. Must have completed Entry Writing prior to enrollment.

Upon completion of Lower Division Writing, all Engineering students must complete ENGR 190W. ENGR 190W is a major requirement that also satisfied Upper Division Writing that must be taken for letter grade.
