Change of Major

Updated 9/19/25

Effective September 19, 2025, Change of Major applications for the School of Engineering will be reviewed only during the Summer, except for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). CSE applications will continue to be reviewed quarterly in coordination with the School of ICS.

Most majors will have two review periods during the Summer. However, students applying to Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering will have only one application deadline.

All applications are reviewed by a committee. Below you’ll find the application deadline(s) for this academic year. Please be aware that deadlines are strictly enforced; no exceptions will be granted.

Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering

Application Deadline: June 22, 2026, 11:59 PM PST
Decisions will be made by July 10, 2026

Computer Science and Engineering

TBD

All other engineering majors

First Review:
Application Deadline: June 22, 2026, 11:59 PM PST
Decisions will be made by July 10, 2026

Second Review:
Application Deadline: September 17, 2026, 11:59 PM PST
Decisions will be made by September 25, 2026

Change of major requirements must be completed before applying. This means final grades must be posted to your transcript. Failure to complete the minimum requirements will result in an automatic denial of the major you are applying for.

Samueli School of Engineering Change of Major Requirements

Applicants can only apply to one engineering major for each application cycle.

Students wishing to declare a dual major in the School of Engineering must meet the requirements listed below. In addition, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and 3.00 GPA in courses required for the engineering major.

Dual majors are not allowed with Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical.

OtherDue to the rigid sequencing of engineering upper-division courses, change of major applications will only be reviewed once a year during the summer. Notifications will be sent before the first day of instruction for Fall Quarter. Applicants can only apply to one engineering major for each application cycle.

Must have 90 units or less. Students with entry status as ‘Freshman’ have two opportunities to apply. Once at the end of the Freshman year and another after the end of the Sophomore year. Change of major applications will not be considered once a student’s junior year starts. AP credits and other units earned prior to high school graduation are excluded when applications are reviewed.

Transfer students are ineligible to apply.

If the eligible pool exceeds the number of students that can be admitted to the major, the following criteria will apply:

Cumulative GPA from all colleges and universities attended
GPA in Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering courses
Number of repeated courses
Volunteer and work experience (especially in the engineering field)
