UC Irvine Summer Session
What is Summer Session?
Summer Session is a period of time in between the Spring and Fall Quarters where you are able to take courses to fulfill your major, minor, or General Education requirements. Note that not all classes are offered over the summer, but it is a good opportunity to take courses outside of the regular school year.
When does Summer Session occur?
- The summer session is divided into three separate sessions.
- Summer Session I and Summer Session II are 5-week long sessions, the 10-week session occurs over 10 weeks.
- Each session offers separate courses and students may take multiple courses across the different summer sessions.
- The schedule for Summer Session 2023 can be found here:
How does one enroll for Summer Session?
- Enrollment opens on March 1st for the upcoming summer every school year.
- Enrollment is separate from regular school year enrollment, not done through WebReg, but instead through their website:
- Summer Session at UCI
- Log in with your UCInetID and password
- Navigate to the enrollment menu where you can add and drop courses as you would with WebReg
- There are no major restrictions for summer enrollment for the majority of courses; however, there are still maximum unit caps and prerequisites for certain courses.
How are finances for Summer Session handled?
- Financial Aid is also handled separately with more information about it at this link:
- Aside from financial aid, students pay for Summer Session courses per unit rather than tuition like in the school year.
- For the summer session, students will only have to pay up to 8-course units (plus an additional campus fee) after which each additional course unit is free.
Why Summer Session?
- Good opportunity to catch up or get ahead on courses for major, minor, specializations, or more.
- They count the same as a UCI quarter course but are available over a 5 week period for the majority of the courses. (nice to get certain courses over with the quicker pace)
- The advantage to Summer Session is that there are no major restrictions and classes are enrolled on a first come first serve basis, so any course that is normally impacted or major restricted during the school year, it is a good opportunity to take over the summer.
- Summer is also a good time to take courses that you may feel are difficult to fit in during the school year. In my own experience, I was able to add a minor by taking 4 of the minor courses over the span of a summer.
- Another nice perk to summer is the fact that you only have to pay for up to 8 units, if you decide to take more than two 4 unit courses, you save for each additional unit after.
